 Alternators

Part no: Q9912 (one wire version) Fitting Chevrolet 1955-1959 with P/S connection for original P/S pump

You are about to install a alternator that contains modern electronics in a vehicle that was not equipped with electronics before. It is very important that you read and follow the instructions. A misconnection may destroy electronic components.

TORQQ XC alternators look like DC generators. They are designed and manufactured to replace the original DC generator. They are built with brand new parts and in that they have more power at all rpm give reliability and drivability like modern cars. Additionally, the charging voltage is higher than the original in order to better fill modern batteries. All dimensions of the generator are equal to the original generator, except for the diameter which is slightly larger.

The car's electrical system: TORQQ XC alternators work on 12 volt system with negative ground.

Charge wires: Due to the higher charging current, the wires from the alternator to the battery have to be thicker than the vehicle's original system. If the original wire is used, an AWG 10 auxiliary wire has to be added, connected in parallel from B + on the alternator to the battery positive terminal. If the original wire is removed, use AWG 6.

Grounding wire: Install an AWG 10 wire on the alternators rear bolt to the car's frame/engine block. If the original wire is removed, use AWG 6. This ground wire is important because the generator housing is powder coated and is not electrically conductive.

Original voltage regulator: This is not used. You have the choice of either remove the voltage regulator and remove the wires that are not used or let them be and insulate the wires that are not needed.

Belt: The alternator has a pulley designed for 9.5 mm (3/8 ") belt. If another belt type is used the pulley must be replaced. It is very important that the belt tracks, adjust if necessary.

Belt tension: As the output power is higher than on the original generator the belt must be tightened harder than before.

Pulley: This alternator has a pulley with 75 mm diameter, this provides a charging current of 25A at idle. The speed of the P/S pump increases 10% compared the original at the same engine speed.
If you want 40A at idle, you can mount our pulley with 60 mm diameter. The speed of the power steering pump then increases to 42% over the original at the same engine speed. We do not know how it affects the power steering pump or the servo system.

Q9902/Q9912 in Corvette C1

You can use Q9902/Q9912 in a C1 Corvette with tachometer drive, but you have to be aware of the following differences between the passenger car and Corvette generators.

The 1955-1959 passenger car PS generators, 1102114 and 1102115, use the same case and rear splined armature as the Corvette tachometer drive generators but the end frames are different. The difference is in the distance between the centerline of the armature and the centerline of the rubber bushing mounting bosses. The distance is shorter on the Corvette than the PS gen. This is accomplished by using different front and rear end frames. The PS generator can be fitted with the tach drive and used on the Corvette, but it will stand slightly taller on the mount.

The alternators charging characteristics give a very low output at idle with the original generators pulley size. [/text]

Corvette 1955-1961 Idle, 700 rpm Cruising, 2000 rpm
C1 Crank shaft pulley 172 mm (6 3/4") Ratio Ampere Ampere
C1 generator pulley 92.1 mm (3 5/8") 1.87 14A 70 A
Q9902/Q9912 pulley 75 mm 2.3 20A 77 A
Q9901 pulley 60 mm 2.87 42A 80 A

You could install an alternator pulley of the same size as the original generator pulley (3 5/8”) and the tach will show correct RPM, but the charging performance at idle is not perfect. The only perfect solution to this problem is to have special gears made for the tach drive.
